Mariella Mehr was born 1947 in Switzerland. She is of Roma (Gypsy) origin. Her childhood and adolescence is a typical example for members of this minority under the Swiss Gypsy oppression system. She has been honoured by literary awards and prizes. For her courageous fight against discrimination of minorities and the documentation she created in this field the University of Basel honoured her with a PH.D. honoris causa of the faculty of philosophy and history.
